A planetarian perspective on what's working where - worldwide

Definitions:

Ecological - Holism: the principle that "everything is connected to everything else." Humans are part of the global biosphere, which is, in turn, rooted in the matrix of ongoing cosmic evolution.

Options - Existing, feasible, presently available choices at this pivotal plexus point in biological and human history, which conform to ecological, sustainability values and criteria.

Sustainable - Practices, process or institutional patterns which can be continued for a minimum of seven generations into the future:
(1) Protecting non-renewable resources - no depletion
(2) Protecting renewable resources - no depletion†
(3) Preserving existing cultures and ecosystems - no violence.
(4) Safeguarding the human genepool - no damage
(5) Preventing further pollution of the planetary biosphere
(6) Upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and/or its corollaries

Network - A synergistic, heterarchical, self-organizing social and information exchange system.

Binocular Vision - The capacity and willingness to see both the 'dangers' and the 'opportunities' in every situation; to keep in one integrated perspective both the woe and the joy, the problems and the solutions, the breakdowns and the breakthroughs, the de-volutionary and the e-volutionary.

On our site you will find useful information and links relating to ecological, humane, sustainable alternatives in areas ranging from personal relationship, family and community forms to bio-benign technologies, social innovations and international institutions.

You will also find reporting, analyses and critiques on the vision, accomplishments and serious challenges facing what we call the Planetarian Project - the worldwide self-organizing grassroots movement to create a better, more just, more peaceful, more sustainable world.

MAPPING A MORPHING WORLD
We are living through an historical cross-fade of unprecedented magnitude and complexity. It is an epochal transition in which an emerging planetary society based on cooperation, compassion, non-violence, diversity, justice and ecological sustainability is struggling up through the widening cracks in a failing world system based on competition, violence, exploitation, control and consumption.

CONVERGING VECTORS OF CRISIS
Global vectors of crisis are converging that threaten not only the continuation of the transnational industrial society which created them, but the very biosphere itself. On a world scale an unsustainable mode of organizing civilization is colliding with the limits, not only of its growth, but also of its existence. Global climate change, the 5th Great Extinction of Species and proliferating human rights violations, the economic crash, disease threats and escalating violence are among the most serious and obvious results.

ESCALATING SOLUTIONS
At the same time, on every continent, at every level from village to international institution, urban to rural, and in every sector from commerce, industry and agriculture to community, family and relationship, people are being successful in practicing and developing creative, sustainable responses to all our collective challenges - from human rights to global climate change.

AN EVOLUTIONARY MOMENT
In order to comprehend the magnitude of the evolutionary moment we now confront as a species, and make appropriate, responsible choices on behalf of future generations, a whole-systems view is necessary. We need an analytical, diagnostic and prescriptive model that provides a synoptic vision simultaneously of both the dangers and the opportunities in our collective situation.

BINOCULAR VISION
Without a clear understanding of the problems confronting humanity, we can't have an appreciation of the urgency and elegance of the solutions. We need a binocular perspective, based in values of justice, non-violence, democracy, diversity and sustainability, that is at once galvanized by present perils and empowered by promise and potential. We need accurate, up-to-date information about what's NOT working and why not, what IS working, and why.

LINKING SOUTH & NORTH
We need more effective channels opened between the global South and the global North so that innovators, entrepreneurs and activists, NGO's, institutions and businesses in both regions can communicate, cooperate and co-create, and so that transfer and exchange of knowledge, best practices and appropriate technologies can freely occur across national, cultural and economic boundaries.

CONNECTING THE DOTS OF AN EMERGENT PLANETARY SOCIETY
The mission of the Ecological Options Network - EON - is to help fill these needs by working to chart the emergence of a sustainable planetary society, to map what's working where, document it, publicize it and facilitate communication and collaboration between all those who are doing it. More specifically, E.O.N.'s mission is being fulfilled through the following programming and activities:
